The beaches to the west of Balagne

From Algajola to the shores of the Argentella

The beaches in the west of Balagne

To the west of Balagne, around the town of Calvi, the beaches stretch from Algaiola – Algajola right up to the outskirts of Scandola. From large bays and sheltered coves to pebbly shores, each offers a different way to enjoy the sea, combining relaxation, activities and unspoilt nature.

1. Algaiola

A long sandy beach stretching from the village to the shores of Varcale, it is one of the most accessible in the area. The road and railway run alongside it, making it easy to reach on foot or by car. Lifeguarded during the season, it offersa peaceful setting for families, with its rocks and shallow waters near the village and the Castellu – the castle.

The beach establishments provide sun loungers, parasols and refreshments for moments of relaxation and socialising. Meanwhile, thrill-seekers and sports enthusiasts can enjoy scuba diving, windsurfing, jet-skiing and towable tubes… Facilities are also in place to make access to the sea easier for people with reduced mobility, with adapted mats and wheelchairs.

Swimming here is pleasant but can become more challenging when the wind picks up. The depth increases rapidly as you move away from the village and in certain spots. Its orientation makes the currents more unpredictable, especially in windy conditions, so swimmers are advised to exercise caution, whilst the area becomes a playground for water sports enthusiasts.

2. Sant’Ambroggio Beach

Just a stone’s throw from the marina, situated between L’Isula – L’Ile-Rousse and Calvi, this beach offers a sheltered spot that’s particularly welcome on windy days. The fine sand and clear water make it an ideal spot for a peaceful swim, often enjoyed by families when the sea is calm.

Its proximity to the harbour makes it easily accessible, with parking available and a range of nearby facilities: a diving school, boat hire and water sports provide the perfect backdrop for a relaxing day. The rocks around the beach and the crystal-clear water also make it ideal for exploring the seabed whilst snorkelling.

3. Arinella Beach in Lumio

Arinella Beach stands out for its more rugged landscape, with a mix of sand and rocks. It is easily accessible, whether by car or train, with parking available right nearby.

It is well suited to families, particularly thanks to its sheltered areas and its remarkably clear waters. A beachfront restaurant allows you to enjoy the spot whether you’re having lunch or relaxing on a sun lounger, whilst the surrounding rocks attract snorkelling enthusiasts.

The coastal paths starting from the beach reveal, as you walk, other unspoilt coves and invite you to enjoy different views of the coast and the horizon.

4. Calvi Beach

Calvi beach stretches for nearly 5 kilometres, facing the imposing citadel and its marina. To get there, the shady pine forest offers numerous footpaths and car parks, just a few metres from the sand. The wooden footbridge, running alongside the railway line, also provides a route from the town centre to the perfect spot to lay out your towel.

With its fine sand, gentle slope and shallow waters, it proves to be a popular destination for families on sunny days. Several areas are lifeguard-supervised during the season, and numerous establishments offer sun loungers, food and drink, and water sports all along the bay.
For those seeking peace and quiet, even on busy summer days, the beach’s length means you can find quiet spots, especially as you move further away from the town centre.

5. Crovani Beach / Argentella Beach

Away from the busiest areas, not far from the village of Galeria, Crovani beach – also known as Argentella– invites you to immerse yourself in a different atmosphere. Here, the beach is made up of pebbles in a variety of colours and the sea is often rougher.

Access is straightforward, with a car park right next to the road, but the site remains largely undeveloped and unsupervised. People come here for the peace and quiet, the contrasting colours and that feeling of being in the midst of unspoilt nature, far from the beaches overrun by urban hustle and bustle.
