The museums of Lisula

Another way to discover Corsica

A tour of the museums

The desire to slow down, to let yourself be guided, or simply more unpredictable weather sometimes provides an opportunity to step inside a more unassuming place. From Lisula to the centre of Corsica, the museums extend the journey by giving meaning to what you discover outdoors: a choral piece heard in a church, a church itself, a village of craftspeople or a tradition that is still very much alive. Each visit offers a key to understanding the region for those who look beyond the landscapes.

Listen before you watch

In Pigna, a village renowned for artistic creativity, the MuseuMusica awaits curious travellers. The instruments are as much about history as they are about sound. A cetera – a zither –, a pivana – a flute – or a cialamella, a sort of oboe, reveal a heritage long passed down from generation to generation. The sound archives bring these distinctive tones to life, whilst the explanations reveal the techniques of the instrument-makers and the role of the instruments in village life. On leaving the museum, the narrow streets of Pigna, the craftsmen’s workshops and the earthen auditorium take on a whole new dimension.

A collection born of passion

In Curbara, two museums offer contrasting perspectives.

Housed in the former sacristies of the Collegiate Church of A Nunziata, the Treasury Museum houses liturgical vestments, gold and silverware, reliquaries and the papal bull that elevated the church to the status of a collegiate church in 1752.

A few streets away, Guy Savelli opens the doors to his house-museum. Old maps, manuscripts, weapons, coins, musical instruments and everyday objects make up a collection built up over several decades. The display cases come to life thanks to the stories told by the collector and owner, whose passion enriches every visit.

Broadening horizons in Corsica

As you continue on towards the town of Corte, about an hour’s drive away, the Museum of Corsica broadens your perspective.

The villages you pass through, the songs you hear, the artefacts and traditional crafts you encounter, and the landscapes you traverse all form part of a wider history. Through its ethnographic, artistic, musical and iconographic collections, the Museum of Corsica and the citadel of Corte reveal the various cultural and historical aspects of Corsica.
