Description
Festa di San Teramu: as every year, L'Ile-Rousse celebrates the patron saint of fishermen with workshops, conferences, stands, wreath-laying, mass, a procession through town and out to sea, followed by a concert by Sumenta Nova and a film screening.
Saint Erasmus, also known as Saint Elmo, was bishop of Formia, Italy. A great miracle-worker, he was martyred during the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian and died around 303. A protector of pregnant women, he became the patron saint of sailors after continuing to preach despite being struck by lightning. This legendary episode prompted sailors to invoke him during storms and tempests. The electrical discharges appearing at the top of the masts were then perceived as signs of divine protection, and called "Saint Elmo's fires".
