The 21-column covered market

Situated on Place Paoli, the covered market with its 21 columns in L’Isula – L’Ile-Rousse – is a regular feature of daily life for the people of L’Ile-Rousse. Every morning, people stroll amongst the stalls of local producers, showcasing the richness of the local cuisine as the seasons change, but always with Grégoire as their point of reference. Listed as a historic monument, L’Isula’s covered market has been the town’s hub for meeting and socialising since it was built in the 19th century.

Getting there

Since 1844

The L’Isulacovered market was built between 1844 and 1846 during the term of office of Mr Piccioni, a prominent family from Île-Rousse, to replace the market that had previously been held in the open air.

Its location was no accident. It was established on the former Place de la Citerne, where A Porta Suttana – the lower gate – once stood, which served as a tollgate within the old city walls. It was here that duties were levied on certain goods entering L’Isula. At that time, gardens and vegetable plots surrounded the town, and the market enabled local producers to come and sell their produce directly.

It is thistradition of trade and exchange that the covered market in L’Isula continues to uphold to this day.

The 21 columns

The L’Isula covered market is a vast rectangular hall whose architecture resembles that of an ancient temple. Accessible via steps and a ramp, its cobbled floor supports three rows of columns which in turn support a roof structure covered by a gabled tiled roof. These features give it a strong architectural identity, which has been sketched by many amateur artists.

The covered market has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1993. It thus helps to preserve the urban environment of the town’s historic centre and has undergone restoration work to safeguard its structure. Recently, the columns were restored and have regained their former splendour.

Since 1844

Two centuries after it was built, L’Isula market has retained its original purpose. Every morning, it is filled with stalls run by producers from Balagne and the surrounding area. In spring, the market emerges from its winter slumber and regains its mouth-watering colours. It is in summer that its atmosphere is at its most vibrant, when fish and lobsters sit alongside charcuterie, cheeses, maquis honey and the usual fruit and vegetables. In winter, whilst the stalls are fewer and further between, Corsican clementines take centre stage.

Once the morning bustle has died down, the market hosts – sometimes in the afternoon or evening – concerts, shows or exhibitions by artists taking part in the ‘Les Nocturnes de l’Art’ event. It is also beneath its roof that the Lisulani gather after the procession of the Immaculate Conception on 8 December.
