Reginu Valley

A few kilometres from L’Isula – L’Ile-Rousse, the Reginu Valley unfolds into a vast, fertile plain stretching from the shores of L’Osari – Losari to the villages perched above it. Olive groves, vineyards, pastures, fragrant scrubland and watercourses form an open landscape, centred around the mirror-like waters of Lake Codole. As part of the European Natura 2000 network, the valley demonstrates day in, day out that human presence and environmental conservation can coexist seamlessly.

Getting there

A valley shaped by water and people

The Reginu’s richness also stems from its agricultural character. Olive trees cover the hillsides and the plain, whilst vineyards stretch out particularly around Filicetu – Feliceto – and pastures and livestock farming maintain habitats favourable to certain species. In Lisula, therefore, protecting biodiversity does not mean eliminating human activity. On the contrary, the Natura 2000 designation supports the search for a balance between species conservation, agriculture and land use. It is this delicate relationship that gives the valley its character.

A haven for biodiversity

In the skies above the Reginu, the silhouette of the filanciu – the red kite – is a familiar sight. The significant presence of this protected bird of prey has played a major role in the designation of 3,713 hectares of the valley as a Natura 2000 Special Protection Area. Monitoring of the species continues today across the area, particularly around its breeding sites. Other habitats contribute to this biodiversity: riparian woodland along watercourses, maquis, woodlands and agricultural land. Lake Codole, created by the construction of the dam, is home to waterbirds and the European pond turtle.
