Pieve di u Pinu

From Calinzana to Montegrossu

Pieve di U Pinu

Nestled between the foothills of the Monte Grossu massif and the valley, Calinzana – Calenzana –, Muncale – Moncale – and Montegrossu – Montegrosso – form a cluster of villages deeply rooted in their local landscape. A land of pastoral and agricultural traditions – from olive groves to vineyards – the pieve is also the ideal starting point for Corsica’s major hiking routes. With their centuries-old religious heritage and mountainous landscapes, these villages offer a unique immersion in this part of the Balagne.

Calinzana

As the starting point for the legendary GR20 and the Tra Mare e Monti trail – between sea and mountains – the village welcomes numerous walkers every year on their way to the summits ofMonte Grossu. Beyond its reputation as a hiker’s paradise, Calinzanais also a farming village where goat and sheep farming, viticulture, beekeeping and olive growing still play an important role. The village retains a certain spiritual dimension, exemplified by its Baroque Church of Saint Blaise and the Chapel ofSanta Restituta – Saint Restitude – patron saint of the Balagne and the destination of an annual pilgrimage.

Muncale

Perched on a hill overlooking the valley, uMuncale faces the Monte Grossu massif. The village has developed around agriculture, benefiting from land well-suited to olive groves, orchards and terraced fields. Once a key route between Balagne and central Corsica via the Bocca di u Muncale – Col de Moncale – it retains a peaceful way of life today, with the agricultural landscape still very much in evidence. From the village’s higher ground, the views of the mountains and the plain serve as a reminder of the importance of this natural crossroads throughout the ages.

Montegrosso

Among the villages that now make up the municipality of Montegrosso, Montemaiò is surrounded by olive groves that feature prominently in the landscape. With its agricultural terraces, ancient orchards and the paths linking Cassanu – Cassano – and Lunghignanu – Lungghignano, the village bears witness to a rural way of life long centred on olive cultivation and organises‘A Fiera di l’Alivu’ – the olive tree fair – every year. This event celebrates the agro-pastoral heritage embodied by this iconic Mediterranean tree.
