Keeping in step
The bells ring out one last time before the narrow streets are filled with an unusual silence. The villagers join the procession, the first candles are lit and sacred hymns ring out.
Depending on the village, the brotherhoods lead the march or the procession, followed by a community gathered to accompany the patron saint, the Virgin Mary or Christ. In Speluncatu – Speloncato –, L’Isula – L’Ile-Rousse – and in many other villages in Lisula, these gatherings still mark the passing of the seasons. The elders pass on the hymns, the younger generation take their place in the procession and, for a moment of shared celebration, the generations march in unison. Far more than a religious tradition, the procession remains a moment when an entire village affirms its identity and its attachment to a heritage that is still very much alive.
