The secrets of Lisula’s churches

Places that reveal themselves

Churches that echo

In Lisula, the churches do not reveal their secrets at first glance. They open up to you as you explore them, attend a concert, take part in a festival or meet someone. The sound of an ancient organ, the tolling of a bell, the light falling on a Baroque altarpiece or the treasures preserved for centuries reveal a heritage that continues to live on far beyond its stone walls.

The sound of the organs comes back to life

Silence reigns for a few moments, then the first chords gradually fill the nave. The organs regain their voice and the vaults amplify every note. With *La Montagne des Orgues*, these historic, silent instruments are brought back to life through guided tours featuring commentary and singing. To rediscover the sounds of yesteryear, in mid-August, the organs of Pioggiula, and Speluncatu are brought back to life during baroque music concerts. This is an opportunity to step inside the churches, discover their history and hear a remarkable musical heritage resonate.

Hidden treasures

Some doors open only to those who take the time to step through them. In Curbara, the Treasury Museum unveils a heritage rarely shown to the public: reliquaries, gold and silverware, liturgical objects, precious fabrics and works of art that tell the story of several centuries of faith, history and craftsmanship. A visit that reveals another side to churches: the precious objects they still safeguard today.

To the sound of the bells

In Pioggiula-Pioggiola, the bells no longer merely mark the hours. For a few days, they rediscover their language of yesteryear during the Scontru di i Campanari – the gathering of Corsican bell-ringers, in Pioggiula. The bell-ringers take turns at the foot of the bell tower, pulling the ropes by hand and making the bells ring out to rhythms passed down through the generations. Each bell-ringer has their own voice; each peal carries its own message. A little-known auditory heritage that continues to make the mountains of Ghjunsani.

Places to live

Throughout the year, the churches reclaim their place as the beating heart of the villages. A procession passes through their gates, polyphonic chants ring out beneath the vaults, a concert sends vibrations through the stone walls, or a patron saint’s festival brings together locals and visitors. For a brief moment, this heritage ceases to be merely admired and is instead fully experienced. These events serve as a reminder that the churches of Lisula remain places of transmission, encounter and emotion.
